Abuja - Nigerian citizens have reacted negatively to a
report released by the Federal Government detailing
the amount of stolen loot that has been recovered
since the beginning of President Muhammadu Buhari's
tenure in office.
According to a Naij report, many members of the public
have called for the names of those found guilty of
stealing money to be published along with the figures
in what they perceive as a move towards transparency.
Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has
lambasted the report, calling out inaccuracies in the
figures presented and claiming that the total amount of
loot recovered amounts to far less than what was
presented in the report.
"Let me tell you this: That list is not correct. I know
that the EFCC has recovered about $3.1bn. I think this
is just the report from a department; it is not a
comprehensive one," Falana stated.
Falana has indicated that the Government may not
release the names of looters just yet as fears persist
that those who have stolen money may not continue to
come forward.
Augustine Alegeh, President of the Nigerian Bar
Association, has called on President Buhari to fulfill his
promise by releasing the names of those who have
looted Government funds in the past.
Members of the Ijaw National Congress have also
lashed out at Buhari, stating that he has succumbed to
pressure from looters and that the lack of names in the
report indicates this.
Federal Government released its loot report on
Saturday, Premium Times reports.
